About this item
Bodies of Summer is set in the last years of the 21st century where the existence of an afterlife is now a fact: heaven is the internet. Death is only an option as souls can be uploaded to the web and new bodies are purchased by those who choose to reenter the physical world. A pressing need to settle an old score causes Ramiro Olivares to move from the comfort of virtual existence back into a human body. His grandson, who he’s never met in person, can only afford the body of an overweight middle-aged woman. Ramiro doesn’t mind inhabiting a female body but does miss his male genital; he suffers from phantom member syndrome. Ramiro must adjust to the dizzying transformations that the world has undergone since his death. Castagnet walks us through a future reality, terrifyingly similar to our own, where sex, gender, identity, religion, and politics are all defined by the new conditions of the human body. This debut novel won Castagnet the French MEET Award for Best Young Talent and has been translated to French. Castagnet is considered one of the most promising new voices in Latin American literature.
