Kids’ measuring guide

Use the tips & visuals in this guide to make taking your child's body measurements easy-peasy.

Dont have a fabric tape measure? Use a shoelace or pant leg to measure. Then, lay it flat & use a ruler or tape measure to get a numerical measurement.

How to measure

  • Height

    Have your child stand in front of the fridge.Mark the top of the head with a magnet. Measure a straight line from floor to magnet.

  • Chest

    Have your child make airplane arms. Wrap tape measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping it level & snug.

  • Waist

    With your child bending to one side, measure the point where the waist flexes naturally. Keep the tape level & comfortably loose.

  • Hip

    Have your child stand like a tall tree with feet together. Measure a level line around the fullest part of the hips & seat.

  • Inseam

    Take a pair of pants that fit your child well. Measure along the seam from crotch to leg opening.

  • A: I ordered two sizes to have my son try them on and returned one of them. The 8 had a sleeve length (shoulder seam to cuff) of 19 inches. The 10 had a sleeve length of 20.5 inches.

Q: why do the sleeves have 4 buttons that overlap. I have never seen this before on a suit coat. Is this a defect?

    The suit pants for the Cat and Jack boys’ suits are true to size. The jackets are legit 2 sizes too big. My bigger than average 6yr was swimming in the 6 yr jacket. The 6 fit my 9yo perfectly! Not sure what model Cat and Jack are using to determine their suit jacket sizing but you definitely want to size down at least 1 size… maybe 2!

    Very nice jacket but was long in the sleeves for my son. It may be him at that awkward stage of needing to grow a little taller but it would take a lot of alteration to fit him.     I bought this suit coat in size 12 for my 11 year old son. In most shirts that he wears, he's between a size 10 and 12 right now. I figured he'd just grow into the size 12 suit coat. It came today, and I had him try it on with his white button-up shirt. The suit coat is HUGE on him. He's a little small for his age, but had I known how much larger it would be on him, I'd have possibly gone down 2 sizes. A 10 likely would have been grown into. The sleeves aren't exactly hemable (there are false buttons on each of the cuffs, so this would be a bigger job than just tacking the cuffs shorter). The lining of the coat also comes out of the sleeve slightly, but that's fixable. Overall, it's a nice suit coat, but I'd recommend sizing down, even if you want your child to grow into it.
