I find this product is difficult to apply, it smears on my face and doesn't absorb easily. After much gentle rubbing there's still a white cast and/or a residue left on my skin. I don't recommend this to anyone.

Hello Janelle8128. Thank you for sharing your experience with CeraVe Face Moisturizer with Sunscreen, AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion for Normal to Dry Skin - SPF 30 - 3 fl oz. It appears like you are experiencing "Pilling" with this product. When skincare rolls up into little balls on the skin it can happen for the following reasons: -Thick Formulation & Sunscreen Filters: Because it combines a moisturizer with SPF filters, it contains heavy emulsifiers, thickening agents (like carbomer and silica), and sunscreens. When applied in excess, the skin cannot absorb it all, leaving the extra product on the surface to ball up. _Vigorous Rubbing: Rubbing the lotion into the skin aggressively instead of gently pressing or patting it can disrupt the polymers and cause them to pill. -Layering Incompatible Products: If you apply it over certain serums, oils, or primers (especially those high in silicones or different film-formers), the conflicting ingredients can repel each other and pill. Rushing Your Routine: Applying makeup or another product too quickly before the lotion has had time to fully dry and set on the skin. Tips to prevent pilling with this product: -Use a smaller amount (about a nickel-sized drop for face and neck). -Pat and press the lotion into your skin gently rather than rubbing it in circles. -Allow 2 to 3 minutes for the moisturizer to fully absorb before applying makeup or any additional layers. We appreciate your feedback and we hope this information helps. Thank you for trying CeraVe.

Difficulty absorbing into the skin
This is a very hydrating lotion, once you get the hang of it. It would leave either streaks or residue on my face. I couldn't use this with any other skincare products either. At first, I had diffculty getting it to absorb into my skin but then the trick that I use is apply this is when my skin is wet then the lotion will absorb into the skin a lot better. It did not break me out and it left my skin very soft a moisturized. However, I will not purchase this product again. I should not have to wet my face in order for the product to absorb.

Do not buy, horrible product
It doesn’t mix into your skin, leaves a white cast and peels

Hello Lani! We are so sorry to hear that you experienced a white cast and pilling with our AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30. Because this formula contains physical mineral sunscreen filters like zinc oxide alongside essential ceramides, it creates a protective shield on the surface of the skin that can sometimes pill if rubbed too vigorously or layered over incompatible products. A wonderful tip to achieve a completely smooth, invisible finish is to apply the lotion to clean skin in gentle, single-direction strokes—rather than rubbing in circles—and let it set naturally into your skin for a few minutes before applying any makeup or heading outdoors.

White residue on the skin
They need to fix this formula. I’ve used this product for two years and still can’t figure out why it leaves some white residue on my skin. It is most definitely NOT my skin. This doesn’t happen with any other products and it happens even after exfoliating. Love the PM version though. I think I’m finally gonna give up on this one and stop buying it. Not worth it

It feels more like sunscreen than a moisturizer.
I've been hunting for a new SPF moisturizer after a certain brand reformulated theirs. Unfortunately, I'll keep looking because this isn't my holy-grail substitute. My skin doesn't readily absorb it as it did for my previous product. Unless I take extra time to rub it in thoroughly, the SPF pills all over my face. Maybe it's because I'm prone to overapplying it or not taking enough time to lather it in, but I don't believe I'd have to go that extra mile for MY ideal moisturizer; I've certainly never had these issues with the previous one. It feels like it's moisturizing well enough, but seemingly not as strongly as it sunscreens. The SPF obtrudes both my face with the white casting and my nose with its thick scent. Again, it could be because I'm overapplying it, but ideally I'd have a wider margin for error than this. That being said, it is probably the best budget-friendly SPF-moisturizer combination. It's a great value at that price despite those issues, and I'm sure it's perfect for other skin types and routines. It just doesn't seem to be compatible enough for me, but that may speak more about my skin and personal preferences than the product itself.

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your detailed review about CeraVe's AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30! We are so glad to hear that you find our AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion to be a great budget-friendly option, but we are sorry to hear it didn't quite live up to your "holy grail" expectations! Because this moisturizer is formulated with Zinc Oxide (a physical sunscreen) to provide broad-spectrum protection, it can sometimes feel a bit heavier or cause pilling if it interacts with other products or is applied in a thick layer. To help prevent pilling and minimize any white cast, we suggest applying in small thin layers, patting it gently into the skin. We will be sure to pass along your feedback to our Manufacturing Teams and suggest to take a look at our Ultra -Light Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 that features an ultra-light texture and matte finish. We hope you give it a try!

Lightweight, hydrates, and definitely protects!!
I’ve been really impressed with CERVAE AM facial moisturizer lotion. It goes on smoothly, absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy feeling. My skin stays hydrated through out the day and the SPF 30 gives me peace of mind for daily sun protection. It’s gentle, fragrance free and works well on sensitive skin. A great everyday moisturizer that keeps my skin feeling soft , protected and healthy looking i REALLY DO recommend!!

Disappointing
I had a bottle of the 15 spf version a few years ago, loved it and thought I'd try the 30 spf one but there is a HUGE difference between this and the 15 spf one. Needless to say, this product didn't do it for me. It goes on white and never really blended with my skin so it's sticky and I look like Casper wearing it. Also kinda smells like sunscreen. Waste of money

Hello Keely! We are so sorry to hear that the transition from our SPF 15 moisturizer to our SPF 30 formula was such a disappointing change for you. To provide that higher level of broad-spectrum sun protection, this formula utilizes different UV filters which naturally give it a slightly richer consistency, and because we are completely fragrance-free to protect sensitive skin, the natural scent of those ingredients can be more noticeable. A helpful tip to ensure a seamless blend without any white cast is to apply the lotion in small, thin layers onto completely dry skin, warming it between your fingertips first to ease absorption. Letting it set undisturbed for a few minutes allows the protective barrier to dry down to a comfortable, weightless finish.

Waste of money.
I love CeraVe but hate this product. The product leaves a strong white cast on my face and the lotion sits on top of my skin. It’s like a sunscreen from the 1990’s. Bummed that I wasted ~$15 on this product.

Hello AC! We are very sorry to hear that our AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion left a noticeable white cast and did not absorb as smoothly as you hoped. Because this formula is designed to deliver both broad-spectrum sun protection and essential ceramides to safeguard your skin barrier, the physical sunscreens in the formula can sometimes require a little extra care during application. A helpful tip to prevent a white cast and ensure seamless absorption is to apply the lotion in small, thin layers, massaging it thoroughly into one area of your face at a time. Allowing the moisturizer to dry down completely for a few minutes before applying any other products also helps the protective barrier settle beautifully and comfortably onto the skin.

Possible Incompatibility w/ Extra Dry Skin
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I tried the sample version of this after years of not using Cerave products. I have extremely dry, sensitive skin, even more so due to my psoriasis. With the proper skincare prep, exfoliating, toner, etc, it may work well for those with my skin type. However, it did not absorb into my skin, the sunscreen began to dry and turn into speckles, and ironically worked better as an exfoliating treatment when I had to wash it off. It did spread extremely well, almost too well, and I believe it was a user issue on my end since I applied a bit more than I normally would with my La-Roche Posay moisturizer. It did feel nice on the parts on my face that did not already have dry, rough patches, as well as hydrating. If someone had oily/combination skin types, then I think they would like this in their morning routine. Otherwise, if you have psoriasis or eczema, you may want to see if they have thicker lotion options for you instead, for extremely dry skin. I gave the rest of my sample to my friend, she had no problem. Her makeup base was also smooth and dewy, whereas it most likely would have been patchy if I wore it under underneath mine. My usual face products prior to trying are: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser Norm-Dry, Differin Exfoliation 2x a week, Differin Toner, as well as La-Roche Posay for extremely dry skin.

Hello Lili! Thank you so much for reaching out about AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion, and thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful breakdown of your experience with your sensitive skin. Since this protective lotion contains physical UV filters and essential ceramides to guard dry skin, applying too much or layering it over active ingredients like exfoliators and toners can sometimes cause the mineral barrier to pill or flake instead of absorbing smoothly. To prevent this pilling and accommodate extremely dry, sensitive skin patches, we highly recommend letting your previous skincare layers dry completely before gently patting—rather than rubbing—a small, nickel-sized amount of the lotion onto the skin to allow it to form an even, protective layer. Thank you so much for sharing this valuable feedback.

Do not buy!
I ran out of my Cetaphil facial moisturizer which I love and bought this because the store was out of the Cetaphil brand. This is NOT a suitable substitute. It clumps up on your skin and stays white. It does not react well with make up. I wound up throwing it away!

AM skincare routine must-have
This is a great multitasker, love that it’s a moisturizer and a sunscreen that I can apply in a single step. The texture is lightweight and absorbs quickly so I can get on with the rest of my day quickly. It offers great UV protection, so it’s a staple in my morning routine.

Horrible reformulation
I’ve been using this product for years. The product was reformulated and it’s now horrible. The product can’t apply evenly and absorb like it used to, leaving the face with a much more noticeable white cast. When you try to rub it in it pills up leaving little balls all over your face that only get worse the more you try to brush them away. Absolutely awful and I’m beyond disappointed. Shame on cerave, a company with a great reputation, for ruining a reliable product.

Hi there! Thank you for being a loyal CeraVe user for so many years. We are incredibly sorry to hear about your disappointment with our updated AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30. We recently reformulated this product to meet new regulatory standards and improve the UV filter distribution. However, we hear you loud and clear regarding the white cast and pilling. Because this formula contains physical UV blockers (Zinc Oxide) and our signature moisture-locking ceramides, pilling can sometimes happen if the lotion is rubbed in too quickly or applied over heavier serums. To help it absorb smoothly without pilling, we recommend: Ensuring your previous skincare layers (like serums) are completely dry. Applying the lotion in small sections, patting or gently smoothing it onto the skin rather than vigorously rubbing. Allowing it a few minutes to fully dry and set. We deeply value your trust and years of loyalty.

Doesn't rub in easily
1 reply from Cerave Product Expert team - 1 month ago
Hello there Timothy! Thank you so much for reaching out about our AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion for Normal to Dry Skin - SPF 30, and hearing about this blending difficulty is very important to us. Because this protective daily moisturizer is formulated with physical mineral sunscreen filters and essential ceramides to protect and restore the skin barrier, the texture can feel richer and require a slightly different application technique than standard lotions. To achieve a seamless, invisible finish without any white cast, we highly recommend warming a small, nickel-sized amount between your fingertips first, then applying it in small sections across the face and patting it gently into the skin rather than rubbing in large circles. Thank you so much for sharing this valuable feedback.

Love the formula, hate the pump
I really like this product and have purchased it multiple times. It is lightweight, moisturizing, and works very well for my skin. However, the packaging is extremely frustrating. The pump repeatedly stops working long before the bottle is empty. This has happened with multiple bottles, not just one. I often have to remove the pump and dig the remaining product out manually. Even then, a lot of lotion stays trapped inside the bottle and goes to waste. The formula is excellent, but the packaging needs serious improvement. Please redesign the pump and bottle so customers can actually use all of the product they pay for.

Hello Marina! Thank you so much for being a loyal fan of our AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion and for sharing how beautifully its lightweight, hydrating formula works for your skin. We are so incredibly sorry to hear that the pump dispenser has been a source of ongoing frustration and waste across several of your purchases, as we always want our packaging to be as functional and reliable as the dermatological care inside. Because our bottles utilize an airless vacuum pump system without a traditional straw to help protect the integrity of the SPF and active ingredients, any small pocket of air can occasionally disrupt the vacuum seal and cause the pump to stop drawing product upward. To help prime the pump and release any trapped air without having to open the bottle, we highly recommend tapping the bottom of the bottle firmly against a flat surface several times to settle the lotion, then pressing the pump down completely a few times while holding the bottle upside down. We are sharing your valuable feedback directly with our packaging design team to help us improve the overall experience, and we would love to assist you further if you would like to reach out to our consumer care team.

It moisturizes very well without feeling heavy, leaves my skin soft and protected throughout the day, and is perfect for my daily routine
I really liked this day lotion with SPF 30 because it moisturizes the skin lightly but effectively, leaving the face soft and comfortable during the day. It absorbs quickly, and does not leave a greasy or heavy feeling and can be easily used under makeup. It also gives me peace of mind to know that it protects the skin from the sun while keeping it well cared for and hydrated.
