About this item

The author provides an ethnographic account of educational aspirations among the economically deprived of Huining County, a rural region in the northwestern Gansu Province in China. Drawing on fieldwork conducted between 2006 and 2014, she describes the families' concept that education changes one's fate and the meaning they place on higher educational attainment, what this reveals about the life goals of individuals in the region, how their goals are shaped by their living conditions, and how educational achievement changes people's lives and fates. She considers what motivates students to study, how they cope with being in a disadvantaged position in comparison to university classmates, their support networks of their place of origin during different stages of their education, which conditions provide for a change of fate, and pathways open to graduates when entering the labor market.
