About this item

The South African city has been contested space for some time, and flux in this instance refers to the constant flow of people not only into, within, and out of a city, but also between different cities, and to the effects on (South) Africa’s cities of these continuously changing conditions. Urbanization as a global phenomenon has economic, political, social and cultural impact on the entire world population. The two Americas and Europe are the most urbanized regions. According to the United Nations, Africa and Asia are still largely rural with 40 and 48 percent living in cities, but it projects that by 2050 the figures will be 56 and 64 percent. Racism has pushed black residents to the margins. After Apartheid there was an influx of Africans to metropolitan areas, making urban spaces mean different things to different people at different times. This volume aims to contribute to and stimulate further discussion about African cities in flux, particularly in the South and in the future. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
