about this item

Professor Özel explores the events that happened between 1576 and the collapse of rural order in 1643, in the district of Amasya, Anatolia. Utilizing the Ottoman political advice literature known as nasihatnames, he cites the complexity of late sixteenth and early seventeenth century Ottoman history and aims to make sense of the quantitative picture the sources present and to contextualize this picture by reference to major developments of this particular period. He revisits the old declinist paradigm using nasihatname literature. Ultimately, he finds that the study and analysis he developed not only confirm the accounts of contemporary observers, but are also in accordance with present knowledge of the general crisis of the turn of the seventeenth century.
