About this item

Eleven years in the making, Reed’s book on the boxing great, formerly known as Cassius Clay, comprehensively covers Ali’s life over the last half of the twentieth century. Steering a course between hagiography and vilification, Reed covers the influence of the Nation of Islam and the Black Movement on his subject, who considered "joining Islam" his greatest accomplishment, and plumbs the depths of the boxer's life through many interviews. Reed asks: “How does one explain that a man with so many flaws can be so adored and almost an object of worship?” Ali threatened interracial couples with death while dating a white woman himself. He justified the assault by members of the Nation of Islam on fellow Muslims, and entertained dictators. He was a bad father to some of the children that he conceived with unmarried women. But Reed also tells the story of an innocent and wide-eyed youth who became corrupted by unsavory and sinister members of his entourage who sought to gain financially from his generosity, hangers-on who later, far beyond Ali’s best years, encouraged him to fight even as he displayed symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and kidney damage.
