About this item

Between the centuries XVI and XVII we have a transitional period: before music is one of the studies generally included women’s education, to be attended exclusively in strictly private family or conventual environments, but then it becomes a professional and prestigious activity, such as the composer Francesca Caccini or the courtesan singers Checca and Margherita Costa. The catalogue of the exhibition set up from 8 March to 13 May 2018 in the Oratory of Santa Caterina delle Ruote in Bagno a Ripoli (Florence) presents, alongside these figures of women musicians, also some women painters who liked to be represented next to music instruments, such as Lavinia Fontana and Marietta Robusti, daughter of the famous Jacopo Tintoretto. It also deals with the theme of female musical patronage, as a phenomenon emblematically represented at the court of the Medici, such like Cristina di Lorena and Vittoria della Rovere. Texts by Eike Schmidt, Francesco Casini, Laura Donati, Antonella D'Ovidio, Maddalena Bonechi, Fausta Navarro, Lisa Goldenberg Stoppato, Sandro Bellesi, Carla Basagni.
