About this item

In northern Cameroon the palace traditionally has served as both residence and site of political decision-making while providing venues for judicial proceedings and prisons cells, among other potential functions. Inhabiting the palace are rulers, wives and concubines, female servants and male guards--the vast majority of whom are from local, indigenous populations, while the ruler comes from the Fulbe ethnicity. While architecture in this region has largely been viewed through the lens of ethnicity, DeLancey considers palace architecture of northern Cameroon as central to the formation of political authority in ways that cross ethnic boundaries. When the previously semi-nomadic Fulbe became conquerors they looked to sources outside of their own culture for architectural models and construction techniques. Unique styles helped to introduce an element of diversity that distinguished the architecture of one lamidat--political entity--from the other and provided the building blocks for the construction of local identities that superseded ethnic ones.
