About this item

This book examines Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's relationship with the left and labor movement throughout his political career in Canada, illustrating the interaction between liberalism and democratic socialism that defined most of his life. The author argues that his leftist activity was a warning to his fellow liberals about the dangers a lack of reformism would mean in terms of preserving liberal-capitalist social relations, rather than a call for a postcapitalist Canada, and that Trudeau thought it was his responsibility to ensure a modern, stable, and peaceful liberal order. He proposes that there was a different worldview between his liberalism and the labor-left traditions and challenges interpretations of Trudeau as a socialist aiming to destroy Canadian capitalism or that he was a pragmatic leftist who wanted to contain the negative aspects of capitalism to found a modern and progressive Canada.
