about this item

The premise of this volume is to calculate presidential election statistics the way that people calculate baseball statistics. Within each era of US politics, the author reflects on how election numbers reflected and influenced events of the time, and these parts of the book resemble a popular political history. However, the book also directly compares elections held under vastly different conditions two centuries apart, and plays with the numbers to imagine who would have won if, for instance, races with a third-party candidate had been two-party races instead. The book ends with an "official" record book. The large quantity of statistical information about presidential elections that has been gathered here in an accessible format under one set of covers may prove valuable to historians and statisticians.
