A story of mercy, miracles, and melody--and above all else: love.

During the Great Depression, Fred Allen is born poor and hungry in the shadow of rural Georgia's infamous cotton mills. By the time Fred is three years old, he can play hymns on the piano without missing a note. In kindergarten, he amazes adults with Chopin. Terrified that Fred's genius is proof of a curse, his parents lock away the piano.

Cut off from his only source of joy, little Fred sinks into the chasms of neglect, depression, and hunger. Then Eleanor, a woman just released from prison for attempted murder, rents a room in his family's deteriorating home. Under her fierce eye, Fred is protected, fed, and loved. "You gotta find a way to get out," Eleanor says. "You were born for so much more than this."

Fred undertakes an arduous but miraculous journey through the Juilliard School in New York City, Union Theological Seminary, Columbia University, and eventually the professional music scene. With the help of a few miracles, he climbs the ladder of success, marries, becomes a father and a scholar, and establishes an enviable reputation as a Grammy-nominated music producer.

Then in heartbreaking speed, Fred's past catches up with him, and his family becomes divided. He must choose either to pursue his dreams of fame and success or love.

But miracles aren't just for those with big-city dreams. In Thomasville, Georgia, amid the wreckage of his history, Fred and his resilient wife, Winnie, reassemble the pieces of their lives and encounter what just might be the greatest miracle yet--not just for them but for the entire town.

This inspiring story is sure to encourage anyone who has ever hoped their creative abilities might touch the lives of others.

I do not hyperbolize when I say that this book will change your life. You need to read this book. Though non-fiction, its fascinating Southern story will keep you turning pages, warming your heart as much as any Fannie Flagg novel. But that's not why you need this book. Much like Mr. Holland's Opus, this story will remind you of the power and life-changing effect music can have on young people when someone is willing to guide them, hold them to the high standards they are capable of, and show them how musical experiences can positively and profoundly impact the rest of their lives. But that's not why you need this book. You need this book because it will bring you to your knees only to lift you up again, to a higher and better self. This book will awaken something deep within your soul and will instantly give you a new perspective on your life and those around you. By bearing the deepest held secrets of his past along with the realities of his triumphs, Fred Allen has, as he has done for decades, once again delivered himself to the service and betterment of others, only now instead of his influence extending to the borders of Thomas County, Georgia, there is no limit to the number of people whom he will reach. Through his amazing, devastating, and finally triumphant story, you will be moved to your core, and, from the very heart of your inner self, you will be transformed.

What an incredible book! This is a well written story about a musical genius that chose his love for family over his own fame. The small community he chose as home benefited from his magical musical talent. He touched thousands of high school students in many ways.

As a retired teacher, I appreciate how one teacher can change lives. This book tells the incredible true story of how Fred Allen overcame many obstacles to positively impact the lives of thousands of young people in Thomasville, Georgia. My friends and I were privileged to attend the launch of Crescendo and witness the outpouring of love from Mr. Allen’s former students. I also appreciate how this also tells the love story of Fred and Winnie Allen.

This story absolutely took my breath away. It takes you on a real life journey of how one can rise out of brokenness and end up impacting thousands of others for the better. The heart behind this story is absolutely stunning! It leaves the you asking, what am I going to do with the gifts, talents, and life I’ve been given? I would recommend that all teachers and musicians read this story. Allen Cheney and Julie Cantrell's story telling ability make the book read like fiction. All in all....it is a much needed reminder in todays society that ordinary people can do amazing things!
