Bought this within the past 2 years, it was great. Bought this a couple times recently, horrible. The shells just stick to the bottom even with constant stirring and The shells break apart. I cooked for 8 minutes (box says 8-10) because it was just becoming a mess. But when I added the sauce and ate it, it was definitely undercooked. I'm pretty sure if I cooked it for longer though everything would have just been mush from the shells ripping apart
The cheese had a weird chemical taste and it was bone dry when mixed with the pasta. I let it sit for a few minutes so it would soften and melt, but it was still more like putty than cheese. I had to add a cup of milk just to give it enough moisture to move it around in the pot. I thought all mac and cheese was the same, but next time I'll stick to the name brands.
Shells and cheese are my favorite kind of mac. The word "creamy" in the name is what enticed me to try it. Indeed -the sauce is a thick and creamy consistency out of the packet and "melts" as you stir it with the warm shells. You don't need to use the entire cheese packet at all. I used about 1/3 of the packet since I also added in a little butter and some milk.
I will try store brand products for anything and there are very few that disappoint. There are a few exceptions; cream of soups (I NEVER chance generic on those) and macaroni and cheese products. For some reason nobody can make a decent alternative to K macaroni or shells and cheese and I've tried just about every store brand, so I was skeptical when I picked up the Market Pantry version of Shells and Cheese. There was a pretty good deal on Cartwheel so I gave it a go and I was very surprised. Aside from some of the macaroni sticking together during the cooking process (which might be attributed to the fact that I never add oil or salt to the water or I was lax with my stirring that day) it was good. The next time I was at Target, I stocked up. Hubby and son haven't turned their noses up at it yet!
