About this item

This book proposes that when students know how to learn, they are able to become their own teachers, thus becoming visible learners who articulate what they are learning and why, talk about how they are learning and their next learning steps, use self-regulation strategies, seek challenge, set mastery goals, see errors as opportunities and are comfortable saying that they don’t know or need help, support peers’ learning, know what to do when they don’t know what to do, actively seek feedback, and have metacognitive skills and can talk about them. It describes how to make learning visible by creating assessment-capable learners in grades K-12 who understand their current performance, recognize the gap between it and the expected performance, and select strategies to close that gap. It explains the characteristics of assessment-capable visible learners and factors that build them, and the application of these principles to instructional and assessment practices for creating learners who know their current level of understanding, understand where they’re going and have the confidence to take on the challenge, select tools to guide their learning, seek feedback and recognize that errors are opportunities to learn, monitor progress and adjust their learning, and recognize their learning and teach others. Frey and Fischer are educator-leaders in the US, and Hattie is an author, educator, researcher, and professor of education in Australia. Videos and other web content are accessible online.
