About this item

Behnstedt enlarges and revises his small 1985 dialect atlas of North Yemen to incorporate his subsequent research and to shift from hand-drawn to computer-generated maps. He maps variation in Arabic phonology and phonetics, morphology, pronouns, demonstrative pronouns and adverbs, interrogatives, verbs, and lexicon. Under lexicon, he locates variation in words for particles and adverbs, general nouns, verbs, animals, and agriculture. Examples of specific maps are feminine ending -a in pause: "bed," plurals of amm "uncle," demonstrative pronouns: proximal singular masculine and feminine, verb I: perfect second singular feminine, "small shop,""female lamb." and "ploughshare."
