Q: How are these hung. Attempting to remove them to repaint and I can't get them to release from the screws. Do they slide in from top or from the left or right?

A: To remove them from the wall, you would slide the shelf up and then pull it out from the wall.

A: These shelves are meant to be hung on the wall. If you wanted to use them as stand alone pieces on the ground, we do not see any issues with that, other than they would not be affixed to the wall for stability.
