Book Review of Dream Big by Bob Goff

4 out of 5 stars
Thumbs up graphic, would recommend
Book Review - 2 years ago
From the time many of us are very young, we are encouraged to follow our dreams. We are told to do what makes us happy and be whoever we want. Then we grow up and the narrative changes a little. Instead of “follow your dreams” its “be practical, be realistic, don’t be silly.” That is why I am currently a college student with an undecided major. I am not undecided about what I want to do; I know exactly what I want to do. I am undecided on whether I should do it because of its unrealistic and impractical nature. I think that is what drew me to this book. I have always been one to “dream big” without the knowledge or know-how to follow through. In this book, Goff makes it clear that that this is not the uncommon problem I thought it was. He describes how most people deal with this every day in their own way. Goff gives you the building blocks to realize exactly what you are trying to do with your life and why. He asks the reader to answer three simple questions that can provide an entirely new perspective on a person’s goals, dreams, and future. He is not vague; he explains clearly what exactly he means by everything he says, as well as giving reasoning behind his thinking. He also makes sure to keep the attention of the reader with interesting little anecdotes about his life, family, and friends. My only critique would be that the entirety of the book is threaded with Goff’s deep faith in his religion. Nothing wrong with that exactly, but the book was not marketed as a religious book at all, and it could be a problem for readers that are not a part of the same religion as Goff or are just not religious in general. Overall, I thought this book was an easy read that has me asking myself all the right questions about what exactly I want for myself and why I haven’t gone after it yet; I’m glad that I read it.
