About this item

The Dura language of Nepal was considered extinct by scholars earlier in the 21st century, says Schorer, and it is indeed no longer spoken by the ethnic Dura population. However, a closely related variety called Tandrange continues to be spoken in a handful of Gurung settlements. His goal is to provide linguists and other scholars working in Nepal or in the academic field of comparative Tibeto-Burman linguistics, with the first comprehensive overview in the English language of the little documented lexical and morphological aspects of this language. He also critically appraises earlier efforts to classify Dura within Tibeto-Burman, then newly evaluates the language's phylogenetic position on the basis of evidence from typology, phonology, the lexicon, and morphology. Finally, he sketches a grammar and an etymological dictionary based on the words and sentences he has collected. Annotation ©2016 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
