Q: Is this dyson okay for shag carpets?

A: Hi there, this is Kelly with Dyson. You should be ok to use the Ball Animal Origin on shag pile carpeting. However, if the pile on the carpeting is fairly long, it can cause the brush bar to shut itself off while in use. This can occur if the brush bar motor senses the carpeting fibers as an obstruction. The brush bar will stop working, to prevent the brush bar motor from overheating. You do have the option to disable the brush bar and vacuum with just suction. Not my first Dyson, but an upgrade from my ancient DC07. I like the maneuverability and lower profile on the ball. But there are two problems with this machine. First, after only a few months I started noticing a slight burning smell when I vaccuumed. I have long hair and four shelties, so at first I thought it was just burning from hair getting wrapped around the beater bar. Soon after noticing this burning smell, I took the bottom apart and unscrewed the ends to do a more thorough cleaning of hair wrapped around the beater bar - and discovered the end part of the bar wasn't seated correctly with the screws, and THAT was what was burning. Literally the plastic beater bar was melting every time I vaccuumed. To be clear, this isn't something installed by the end user; it came from the factory like this. Second issue - now I'm trying to get support from Dyson to see if they'll replace this beater bar for me under my warranty, and the website doesn't acknowledge the serial number on this machine to register it, to pull up support documents, nothing at all. I finally got a support response that acknowledged my machine is registered to me and under warranty, but it doesn't appear attached to my account on the website... which you need. Neither does the machine exist in their model selection menu for you to go that route. So it appears this is maybe a model made exclusively for Target, and if you need support with it... you're probably out of luck, because their website doesn't appear to acknowledge this machine. VERY disappointing for such an expensive machine to be out of commission so soon. Worked great for a few months and still does a decent job except for the whole melting plastic and making my house smell like it might catch fire thing.

The vacuum's suction pulled up my area rugs - even with the roller turned off so I was unable to use it. It also was rather awkward and hard to put the vacuum back into it's standing position. It takes several tries to get it to latch. I would not recommend if you have any thinner rugs you are wanted to use this on.

We bought this on a Labor Day sale. First Dyson ever. We love it! I had read some of the (few) negative reviews before purchasing but I honestly don't understand them now that I've used the vacuum. The suction is great on both regular carrier and area rugs... The amount of dirt that came out was disgusting, ha. I don't find it exceptionally heavy to push, either, and had no problems with it falling over or tipping. I honestly love this vacuum.

I am so disappointed in this vacuum. It does not go from floor to carpet. The minute I take it from floor to bedroom carpet it can’t be moved. The brush seizes and it is impossible to vacuum. I also found out it can’t be adjusted. Waste of money.

The suction is good but the machine is hard to work with. It is HEAVY and requires a lot of strength. It will also PULL you forward. It is like walking a big strong dog. You can’t “lean into” the handle either without it “catching” and releasing into what I call a “low, under bed mode” (for lack of a specific term). This has caused me to lose my balance and fall more than once. If you are young and athletic, this may be no problem for you. However, if you are not as “nimble,” then I recommend a more “manageable” model or brand. For me, it is more struggle than it’s worth. I definitely do not recommend this for the elderly. Hope my review is helpful to someone.

I can’t think of anything I dislike! The easy operation and handling is super. It was very easy to assemble. The most outstanding attribute is the suction power! I have owned at least a dozen vacuums of different brands, mostly on a less expensive scale in the past. I’m glad I splurged on price this time! I watched for a sale on Dyson and chose this one. I have 50% bare floor and carpet each, and this vacuum is perfect for my average sized apartment. I do not have pets but decided I couldn’t go wrong with this purchase. I’ve used it for several weeks and firmly believe buying a Dyson and this model was an extremely wise decision!

Very powerful vacuum, I don’t know that my rugs ever looked so clean for so long, but it’s ultimately too heavy and loud. If I lived in a ranch home, small apartment, or another living situation with no stairs, it would be great but I get tired just thinking about using it (34 and not out of shape either). Wouldn’t recommend for elderly. Didn’t work well on large thick area rug and have read reviews elsewhere that Dysons are not designed for use on carpet so not sure what their point is (I use vacuums for rugs and carpet and clean my other floors with a broom/Bona). Assembly was fairly simple but I had to laugh at how ridiculous this thing looks. Used once and back to Target it goes.
