About this item

The authors present an ethnographically-based analysis of Gorovodu (kola nut vodu) religious beliefs and practices as they examine the history and political economy of a West African fishing community. A spirit possession and medicinal order found among many cultural groups along the Bight of Benin and in the Volta region of contemporary Ghana and Togo, the gods of the Gorovodu pantheon originated in witch-finding cults of the early twentieth century, spreading by ritual entrepreneurs in Ghana and Togo. The advent of colonialism and the rise of plantations’ economies inspired new migrations and exchanges of goods and ideas between the coast and savannah. Gorovodu flourishes in the region and beyond due to its adaptability and multi-vocality. Understanding the agencies, institutions, and cultural processes surrounding shrines opens a window that reveals shifting landscapes of power, hopes, dreams, and desires of individuals experiencing millennial Africa. Eight chapters with conclusion are divided into three parts: of spirit, slave, and sea; ethnography of a shrine; performance in Gorovodu ceremony. Chapters are: introduction: religion in millennial West Africa; dawn of the gods: history and power in Eweland; between the pipeline and the sea: the Bbedala community; Gorovodu: a family of gods; the shrine at Gbedala; Fetatrotro: feast and festival; the northern others: slavery and Islam in Gorovodu ceremonial performance; conclusion: shrine ethnography and global vodu.
