European Cosmopolitanism : Colonial Histories and Postcolonial Societies (Hardcover)
about this item
This book examines the cosmopolitan project of post-war Europe. Given institutional form as the EEC and then EU, the project is generally agreed to begin with European states wishing to make amends for their recent violent past of world wars. The book offers a postcolonial appraisal of this history and highlights how European colonialism is often excluded from these accounts. In addressing these exclusions, the focus is not on pluralising the narratives of Europe, but rather is with forging a European cosmopolitanism – of history, identity and politics – more adequate to its postcolonial past and present multicultural constituencies.
