About this item
While the availability of land is finite, climate change places unprecedented demands on it through accelerating rates of urbanization, changing demographic and consumption patterns, technological changes, and deepening market integration. At the EU level, the 2020 road map to a resource-efficient Europe proposes a number of milestones on land and soil. The target as set out in the 7th Environment Action Programme of the European Union is to achieve no net land take by 2050. Thanks to the dedication of several hundred experts, scientists, and students working together on the project of harmonized land cover(LC) mapping and change monitoring from the Nordic boreal forest to the southern coastal Mediterranean regions and from the western Atlantic coastal region to the mountains in continental Europe co-funded by the EU and the national authorities has been possible.
