Exchange, Dialogue, New Divisions? : Ethnic Groups and Political Cultures in Eastern Europe (Paperback)
about this item
Anthropologists and other social scientists follow two different and apparently unrelated thematic lines of inquiry in Eastern Europe. The first is inter-ethnic relations, the question of recognizing so-called minorities, and the second is specific political cultures based on extensive clientelistic and corruptive networks. Both, however, are rooted in widespread mistrust between groups and toward public institutions. Among the topics are the situation of ethnic minorities in Lithuania according to their self-perception, ethnic minorities in the history of Georgia: the post-Soviet history textbooks, diaspora politics and re-migrant perspectives on identity and belonging in Croatia today, transforming traditions of Bulgarian Rudari migrating to Greece, and whether the fifth enlargement of the European Union is reuniting Europe or reinventing Eastern Europe.
