Book Synopsis

Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher--for that world or ours.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was ten, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself--and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it.

Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.

King's storytelling in Fairy Tale soars. This is a magnificent and terrifying tale in which good is pitted against overwhelming evil, and a heroic boy--and his dog--must lead the battle.

Early in the Pandemic, King asked himself: "What could you write that would make you happy?"

"As if my imagination had been waiting for the question to be asked, I saw a vast deserted city--deserted but alive. I saw the empty streets, the haunted buildings, a gargoyle head lying overturned in the street. I saw smashed statues (of what I didn't know, but I eventually found out). I saw a huge, sprawling palace with glass towers so high their tips pierced the clouds. Those images released the story I wanted to tell."

The story was good. There were consistency errors with the timeframe that the story takes place in and the age of the character. None of these issues effected the overall plot though so they are forgivable.

I loved this book and could barely put it down. I’ve never read Stephen King before as I’m not into horror but this fairy tale themed tale was right up my alley! I loved the story telling and fell in love with all the characters. Everything seemed so real while reading and I had a hard time detaching back to reality after finishing the story, that’s how you know it’s a good book!

It was quite a long read but made up for it in the story line. It never felt like it was dragging. I had a hard time putting it down.

Really good book, it is mostly about the story rather than any action, and it is quite long.

I have to admit this was my first Stephen King read! I like many have seen and know all of the movie adaptations based on his books. However, I had never read a single King novel until Fairy Tale. I loved this book and would recommend to anyone! I usually prefer quick reads, books that are fast paced, and no more than 300 pages. Like my mom told me “if it’s good you will want to keep reading no matter how many pages.” She was right and that might be why I have never picked up a Stephen King book until now. I am excited to read his other works now. Fairy Tale keeps you engaged and excited to get back to reading. 🙌

This was a great read. I really enjoyed the illustrations that headed every chapter. They gave my imagination that little extra enjoyment while reading. The first hundred-ish pages lead up to the story. I felt like once I hit that point in the book, the pace picked up pretty well.

I may only be a little over half way through, but King is truly still a living icon and a magnificent storyteller. This has been such a page turner and I highly recommend diving into the story.
