Purchased Charge 5 (my 3rd Fitbit) from Target for the convenient ordering, easy pick-up, and discounts. Gave the first Fitbit, Alta, to a friend when I purchased the Charge 4 in 2021. Alta still working, but Charge 4 died after two years. Charge 5 lasted 14 months. It requires constant restarts and connections to charger to operate. Upon restart, time and data are lost. Google knows this. "Black screen of death" is a common complaint in the Fitbit Community. Google bought Fitbit but chooses not to stand behind the product or provide a fix. An early adopter of tracking devices, I had the first Nike Fuel band, I find this disappointing because Fitbit has the best UI by far, IMO. However, if you cannot count on a device, what good is it? My plan is to put a fresh battery in the Seiko and use a simple step counter.

Got my Fitbit in April of 2023 and it has already died on me. I took good care of it too and never wore it in the shower or pools even though it says it’s water resistant. Yet, 14 months later it has already died on me. I wouldn’t recommend as everyone I know who also owns a Fitbit, has had the same problem with theirs dying within 1-1.5 years of having it. I enjoyed using it during my little time that I had it but I do recommend putting the money towards a higher quality product.
1 reply from FitBit Team team - 1 month ago
Hi, Kesh. We're sorry to hear that your Fitbit Charge 5 is no longer working. We appreciate your feedback. We recommend giving your Fitbit device a restart by connecting your device to the charging cable. Then pressing the button located on the flat end of the charger 3 times with a 1-second pause between each press. Then wait 10 seconds or until the Fitbit logo appears. Please also try the following: Connect your Fitbit device to the charger > Quickly lift it off and put it back on > After a half-second pause, repeat this pick-up-and-place move 3 more times, all within 8 seconds. You can also try checking out our battery charging tips by going to Fitbit Help Center: support.google.com/fitbit/ and searching for "Why isn't my Fitbit device's battery charging?". The device never held a charge like advertised. 12 months and 3 days it is dead completely. Nothing happened to it outside of daily usage. Nothing can be done because we are days after the 12 month warranty. Other family members in our household have the Inspire 3 with no issues. This one is trash.

It was working perfectly and out of nowhere, one day it stopped charging. It's connects and lights up, but the screen shows charging at 1% and never increases. Fitbit support doesn't have a fix and since it's out of warranty, I'm out of luck. It's a firmware problem and no solution. Terrible product to be useless after a year.

It worked great for the first year or so, but it's been bugging out for the past month. There no good way to reset it with the charger like the older models. No matter what i do lately I can't get it to consistently display the time even after adjusting the screen wake settings on the watch. No success in tweaking it through the app. I have bought multiple charger cables for it thinking they had something to do with my problems; but I've been through like 5 cables and frankly i'm done. I've been a fitbit user for almost 10 years, and I'm throwing in the towel after this. Gonna get a Garmin.

I loved my FitBit Charge 5 when I bought it in Jan, 2023. It helped motivate me with tracking my exercise routines, heart rate, step counter, etc. Really helped my sleep hygiene. But then a few months ago Google bought it and "upgraded" (downgraded) the app which was no longer so user friendly and also didn't track my sleep as reliably as it used to. Unless they fix the app, I'm likely to look at alternatives for my next fitness tracker. Too bad. It really had been excellent.

Not the same since Google took over

3 out of 5 stars
Sryan - 1 year ago
Took away certain features I liked, wanted, why I bought it, like no more how many stairs you climb, no more fireworks, disco balls when you hit your daily goal unless you go premium. Now has payments screen which I don't want on my wrist, which is annoying because if you click on it by accident, hard to get out of it have to wait, just want to look at the time. My Google calendar is on the Fitbit now, which I didn't want. I don't want alerts on my wrist as well, I have other avenues for it. Take the calendar off, it goes back on. Google keeps bugging me to switch my Fitbit account over to them. The postives are it is in color now finally, and the design is sleek. But I bought mine when it was still Fitbit, not Google owned. Going to another brand next go round. I just want a fitness tracker, that is it, not calendar, payments etc

Fitbit Charge 5

3 out of 5 stars
LindyBoo - 1 year ago, Verified purchaser
I like that the Fitbit Charge 5 tracks swimming. However this purchase replaced a previous purchase of same model, which was less than 6 months old (I did receive a refund for that). So far my new Charge 5 seems to require charging more frequently than expected although I have tweaked the settings to increase battery life.
1 reply from FitBit Team team - 1 year ago
Hi, LindyBoo. We're sorry to hear about your Charge 5, which requires charging more frequently. We appreciate your effort in trying to fix it. To be of help, please restart your Charge 5. To do so, connect your device to the charging cable, then press the button located on the flat end of the charger three times, pausing for 1 second between presses. Then wait 10 seconds or until the Fitbit logo appears. Meanwhile, the length of time your Fitbit device operates depends on how frequently you use it and on various settings. Examples of high-battery-use features include: GPS, always-on display, a large number of notifications each day, third-party clock faces, animated clock faces, or many timers. I suggest that you disable one or more of these features. For further assistance, feel free to contact customer support to fix the issue.

I have had an overall good experience with this Fitbit. For context, this was an upgrade for me from an Inspire that was several years old. I like that this Fitbit is an in-between from the ultra-basic step trackers and full-on smartwatches (for me a smartwatch face is too large, with too many features, and too pricy for what I want). All I wanted is a mid-range Fitbit that gives me good step tracking and heart rate tracking, and that is what I got. I’d say the notifications functions on this are not perfect, but good enough for me as I don’t like checking my phone compulsively outside of what I need for work anyway. I’d say it tracks my HR best when I’m on my bike and my hand position isn’t changing much, it doesn’t seem to track quite as well when I’m lifting weights, but that could be me not being as observant of it when I’m lifting. I get roughly just under a week of charge on this when I don’t remember to charge it regularly. Overall I’d say it was worth it at a sale price, not sure I’d pay the full price on this one.

“Find my phone” is useless! Sensitivity of screens is unpredictable. Sometimes you have to tap hard, sometimes soft., sometimes doesn’t respond at all. I understand it’s a stripped down tracker but the little it offers is not reliable at all.
1 reply from FitBit Team team - 1 year ago
Hi, Dw18901. Sorry to hear that your Charge 5's display is unpredictable. Please try giving it a restart by pressing the button located on the flat end of the charger 3 times, pausing for 1 second between presses. Then wait 10 seconds or until the Fitbit logo appears. For the 'Find Phone' app issue, please note that your Fitbit device must be connected (“paired”) to the phone you want to locate. Also, your phone must have Bluetooth turned on and be within 30 feet (10m) of your Fitbit device and the Fitbit app must be running in the background on your phone. If the issue persists, please contact our Support Team for further assistance.
