about this item

Originating in a workshop at the University of Ottawa in October 2015 on Memory, Truth and Reconciliation in Southeast Asia, this book, at its core, mixes academic and advocacy perspectives. It begins with research questions about truth and reconciliation processes in Indonesia and Timor-Leste, and is followed by Melanesian cases as well as both from Indonesian-ruled Papua and from the independent Solomon Islands. It highlights two less-studied aspects of two commissions. First, it examines the ways in which truth commissions seek to define and disseminate an agreed-upon “truth” regarding past events and to deploy that truth in ways that will serve the present. Second is the focus in many commissions’ reports on aspects that relate to memory and memorialization. They incorporate history into existing literature on truth commissions while highlighting the manner in which stories told by truth commissions are framed as authoritative truths, and, driven by witness and victim testimony, became an emerging form of historical narrative creation.
