About this item

Goldthwaite proclaims her overall message: food is worthy of scholarly attention. Just as the purposes, contexts, and genres analyzed in this collection are varied, so are the rhetorical theories used, whether traditional, invitational, rhetoric or rhetorical listening, or social circulation. While recipes and cookbooks have not been popular in the past as subjects of research in the field of rhetoric and composition, feminist scholars increasingly beg to differ. The book is divided into five parts. The first analyzes cookbooks and recipes in different contexts, and shows the ways personal, cultural, and political identities are connected and can have historical important rhetorical effects. The second shows that feminist food writing is neither monolithic nor beyond the critic’s purview. Third, the contributors consider the social, cultural and political effects of particular representations of food-related practices. Finally, it focuses on bodies and culture--both self-representation and representations of others for particular rhetorical purposes. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
