About this item

Shay describes the Fort McClellan prisoner of war camp in Alabama, like the main US Army training post to which is was attached, as a model facility. It was spared a heavy influx of intensely ideological captives, whether supporting or vilifying the governing philosophy of Germany's Third Reich, he says, and throughout its nearly three-year existence, reported none of the prisoner-on-prisoner executions that many camps witnessed. There were also few escape attempts, inmate strikes, and suicides. He describes how the American administrators sought to educate the prisoners, occupy their time with wage-paying work, and encourage their pursuit of artistic and athletic pastimes.
