About this item

Ultimately, Pullinger aims to model a way of reading her book that will open eyes and ears to its particular qualities as poetry and literature for children. Her book is about children’s poetry, i.e., poetry composed by adult poets for a child audience. Drawing on her doctoral research project, her investigation also includes research and ideas in literature, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and cultural studies. Her book also reflects her current research into the embodied experience of poetry in the Poetry and Memory Project. This body of literature necessarily involves questions about the condition of children, about our relationship with language and about the nature of poetry. She considers what makes a children’s poem a children’s poem; what distinguishes children’s poetry from poetry in general; and why it has proved so resistant to theories of children’s literature in general.
