About this item

The author recounts the scandal involving University of Georgia athletic director and ex-coach Wally Butts and University of Alabama football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, in which Butts seemed to be giving Bryant play formations that would help the Alabama football team defeat Georgia in the 1962 season opener. Atlanta insurance salesman George Burnett overheard their phone conversation and the story was published as "The Story of a College Football Fix" in a 1963 issue of the Saturday Evening Post, but Butts sued for libel and won. The case went to the Supreme Court, where it was upheld in a decision that expanded the legal definition of public figures. The author examines the case and what Butts and Bryant said to each other in the phone conversation, whether their conversation affected the outcome of the game, and whether the Saturday Evening Post published the story in good faith.
