About this item

Presenting viewpoints from the fields of history sociology, and political theory, Gürcan and Johnson fill the gap---the absence of a Turkish perspective in English of the war against the Ottomans. Drawing on Turkish sources--letters and diaries of Turkish soldiers, Turkish general staff archival documents, Ottoman journals and newspapers, and recent academic literature by Turkish scholars--they provide different perspectives on the campaign. They study the history of war focusing on the Ottoman war experience, and present insights into the campaign’s influence on the collective memory and construction of national identity in contemporary Turkey. They cite a range of explanatory approaches that played significant roles in the outcome at Gallipoli. First is the Atatürkist discourse which emphasizes Mustafa Kemal’s skills, foresight and charisma. The second is the “modernist institutionalist” which stresses the “military effectiveness” of the Ottoman Fifth Army at tactical and operational levels. Third is the “modernist-structuralist” discourse which cites dynamics hidden below the surface of the war. Fourth is the “German influence,” which emphasizes the importance of German military expertise in the modernization of the Ottoman armed forces. The fifth concentrates on the identities and collective sentiments which strengthened the morale and motivation of Ottoman soldiers and their civilian supports.
