Garden Of The Cursed is an excellent young adult high fantasy/mystery! This book was just shy of five stars for me. Garden Of The Cursed started out a bit slow and it took me a bit to get into it, but once I did I was hooked! This book follows Marlow, a cursebreaker, as she tries to figure out who cursed her old friend Adrius Falcreast. Marrow’s relationship with Adrius is complicated and it only gets worse when they start fake dating to help solve the mystery as to who cursed him. On top of trying to break Adrius’ curse, Marlow is searching for her mother who has been missing for a year. Overall this was a wonderful, unique read and I loved how it combined two of my favorite genres, mystery and fantasy. I loved all the different characters, especially Marlow. This book was full of mystery and magic and I’ve never read anything quite like it. I can’t waist to see how the story continues in the next book!

I honestly don’t know how to express how much I love this book. I loved everything- the plot, characters, writing style, magic system; I loved it all. Essentially the main character, Marlow, is a curse breaker, but she used to live a different life before. One day, the guy she used to have feelings for, Adrius Falcrest, comes back into her life asking her to help him with a curse. So Marlow takes on the case, but she is also trying to find her missing mother at the same time. This book is definitely like a fantasy/ mystery with some romance added in. There’s second chance romance and the fake dating trope which is done so well. The way Adrius pines after Marlow had me giggling because it was so cute. My only complaint with the book was that I honestly did not really know what the setting was. It took me like the whole book to figure out if Caraza was a city or country, and then I couldn’t figure out what time period it was supposed to be because there was no phones and stuff, but there were cameras. So overall I still gave it a 5 star, but there were only some minor issues for me.

Garden of the Cursed is a well-written YA fantasy/mystery/romance. Marlow once lived with her mother among the elite residents of Evergarden, but after her mother's disappearance she moved to the Marshes, the downtrodden part of Caraza. She makes a living as a curse breaker, attempts to steer clear of the local gangs, and hangs out with her loyal friend Swift. When Adrius, an estranged friend and scion of one of the five wealthiest families comes to her for help in breaking a curse that has been put on him, she agrees for the lucrative fee and the chance to re-enter Evergarden and investigate the disappearance of her mother. Adrius and Marlow enter into a fake romantic relationship to allow Marlow track down the source of his curse. The world building is immersive and vivid. The magic system is fascinating with its varied hexes, spells, curses and enchantments. The plot is complicated and fast paced with unpredictable twists and turns. The characters are well developed and interesting. Garden of the Cursed was an enjoyable, entertaining story with a tough, clever heroine. I couldn't put it down.

Sadly this story is also one of the loss of innocence surrounding what the young (Marlow) thinks about the world and the individuals in it- and what the true reality of the nature of most individuals are. That, in the end, the very best of them have somehow been tarnished by the world and what is in it so that they are no longer the good person they present to the world, that people think them to be. And maybe they were never a good person at all, that since they have somehow succumbed to the nefarious things they now do, they never meant to be part of the good of the world. However most of the youth in their innocence do not ever know this until it is time to see the reality of their world, the world around them. And in Garden of the Cursed, this is when Marlow finds her own innocence die, by the end, at war with whether she will succumb to the loss of her own goodness or stand against the dark and continue to fight, keep the good that is in Marlow.

That ending though! I was hooked from start to finish! I can’t wait for the next book even though this one isn’t even out yet! I loved Marlow and her story. I really felt for her and was invested in her trying to figure out what happened to her Mother and who cursed Adrius. Marlow seems like such a kind and caring person on the inside. She really does care about who she’s helping and making sure that people get justice against those who’ve cursed them. This is an easy to follow fantasy world that I was happy to get lost in. I'm super excited for more to come out in this series and I'm anxiously waiting for book 2.

Though Marlow is skilled as a cursebreaker, the one case she can’t seem to solve is the disappearance of her mother. Adrius, a scion of an affluent spell-making family and an old friend, asks Marlow for help with a life-threatening curse. Marlow is hesitant to assist due to their troubled past, but her feelings change once she realizes that Adrius’s case may be tied to her mother’s. Though the premise of GARDEN OF THE CURSED instantly caught my attention, the book began slowly and it took a little while for me to really feel invested in the story. Once I did, it was hard to put down. It turned out to be an exciting and fantastic YA fantasy romance with great worldbuilding and interesting characters. Marlow gives off Veronica Mars vibes which I loved. I found the plot to be unique. I didn’t realize that this was book one of a series. When it ended with plot lines left unresolved, I was disappointed that I have to wait for the next book to find out what happens. I will definitely be reading future installments. GARDEN OF THE CURSED was a fantastic YA fantasy romance that I’d highly recommend. It is book one of Katy Rose Pool’s Garden of the Cursed series. This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I will be checking out her other works and look forward to reading the continuation of this series. Thank you to Henry Holt and Company for the gifted copy.
