about this item

An unusual account of the Battle of Gettysburg, this book is organized around full-color reproductions of the Gettysburg Cyclorama, a gigantic scroll painting of Pickett's Charge. Such paintings were frequently used in the 19th century in public lectures on a topic, unrolled section by section as the talk progressed to show the unfolding of an event over time. The authors are battlefield guides at Gettysburg National Military Park, and use the Cyclorama here both as an educational tool and a chance to talk about how the battle was portrayed. Photographer Bill Dowling has turned each section into a photographic spread; inset details and historical photographs on the following pages are number-coded to points in the Cyclorama that the authors discuss to help readers understand both what happened at Gettysburg and how people in the years following the war saw these events (the Cyclorama was modified by the artist in response to popular feedback from Civil War veterans). The colorful format with its many capsule descriptions will appeal to readers with Civil War interests, as well as art and visual historians, museum educators, and those who enjoy coffee-table books of 19th century painting.
