About this item

A searing dispatch from the front lines of the Patriot movement, America’s growing radical right-wing fringe. The contemporary Patriot movement is a kind of patchwork quilt that stretches across all fifty statesone much larger and more variegated than the militia movement” that came to prominence in the mid-1990s.Don’t Tread on Me maps the pieces of this patchwork: independent militias and prepper communities, as well as national networks of self-identified Oath Keepers, County Supremacists, Sovereign Citizens, and Three Percenters. It explores the ideology of today’s anti-government activism, one that includes everything from small-government GOP talking points to the festering viro-spheres of conspiracy culture and the racist far right.Don’t Tread on Me will put current anti-government activism within its historical context. Groups that question and oppose the authority of the US government are as old the government itself. Beginning with the Whiskey Rebellion, there have been groups purporting to stand for the true” values for which the American Revolution was fought. While these values were once associated with positions we today would call left-populist, their twentieth- and twenty-first-century descendants have increasingly taken on a right-wing flavor that has absorbed Republican Party economics and animus toward big government” and mixed them with extreme xenophobia, racism, and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. There has been a concurrent militarization of this ideology, with a growing focus on stockpiling light arms and a fetishization of the Second Amendment. Don’t Tread on Me explores the political and economic drivers of this transformation, showing the ties between anti-government groups and DC power brokers, and the increasing threat posed by this movement.
