about this item

A volume in a series (Thamyris) devoted to the intersection of race, sexuality, and place, this book gathers papers and interviews on same-sex relations and cultures from sixteen countries in the Global South. Most contributors are informed by critical theory and come from the cultures (if not always the groups) they write about. The connecting link between the pieces is their questioning of the idea of "******" as a singular overarching identity for same-sex attractions and gender variant lives; many point out that the idea of "******" was invented by Euro-American cultures and is encouraged or enforced by their politics in areas from political activism to HIV/AIDS policy. Contributors offer their ideas about where "******" identity and its politics disempowers or supports people in a Global South culture, and whether and how a dialogue between global ****** and local self-definition is helpful. Topics frequently taboo in LGBT politics in the US are openly discussed here, including the difference between trans people and third-gender people (in the context of identities and tourism in Thailand) and the uniquely ostracized status of men who are visibly gay, regardless of class (in the context of India). As the critical theory tradition generally works to define correct vs unacceptable beliefs and behaviors, readers may see much of the material here as both exposing and representing patterns of prejudice and tension between groups. The book provides underrepresented points of view for general readers interested in LGBT topics and their intersections with race and culture, and a reader for courses in gender, race, or sexuality studies which will support classroom discussion.
