about this item

This resource designed for high school teachers and librarians will also be useful at the community college level. The book presents workshops for guiding students in the steps of producing a research paper in the humanities. While the set of workshops is designed to be used over a nine- to 12-week time period in a tenth grade American literature course, the material can also be used in social studies, history, and other courses; each workshop can also be used as a stand-alone lesson. Part 1, the teacher’s practicum, explains the guided inquiry approach to teaching the humanities research project and discusses media literacy, the role of social media, and metacognition. Part 2 presents a total of 20 ready-made student workshops grouped by five different phases of the project. Each workshop contains teacher instructions, tips for amounts of time to allow for each task, a list of Common Core standards the workshop fulfills, and student handouts with instructions, questions, and step-by-step activities. Appendices provide teachers and librarians with tools for planning, teaching, and assessing a humanities research paper using a guided inquiry approach.
