About this item
This handbook has three important functions: first, as a basis for a graduate course or seminar in statistical methods in sports; second, the handbook can serve as a reference for statistical practitioners in professional sports; and, finally, it can provide statistical researchers interested in sports applications. The handbook is organized by major sports (baseball, American football, basketball, hockey, and soccer) and is followed by a section on other sports. It provides overviews of statistical methods in sports and in-depth treatment of critical problems and challenges confronting statistical research in sports. Albert intends to provide the reader with the necessary background to conduct serious statistical analyses for sports applications and to appreciate scholarly work in this expanding area.
