About this item

With a belief that the history of the Finnish Canadian experience needs to be told, Beaulieu, Ratz, and Harpelle and their contributors—a small community of academics in Canada—offer their stories of a largely understudied community—Finns in Canada. The first wave of Finnish immigrants arrived a decade after Confederation and lasted until the First World War, followed after the Great War by left-wing Finns fleeing right-wing persecution, and the third wave came after the Second World War. Each wave brought new organizations and different relations with the host population, as well as renewal and rejuvenation of the Finnish community in Canada. A fourth wave has not been identified yet, but Finns continue to immigrate to Canada, although they prefer cities now. The last vestiges of once vibrant Finnish communities situated around the Lake Superior region, parts of British Columbia, and elsewhere, are fading away, along with its language. While clustering in the past kept their language and identity intact, it also made them targets, particularly those who kept alive radical politics. Although the literacy rate among Finnish immigrants and the Canadian archives contain large volumes of documentation in the Canadian archives—some issuing from arrests and deportations--scholarship on Finns within Canada was meager until the 1970s. There is now a field of Finnish studies to which this volume aims to add to. Distributed in the US by University of Washington Press. Distributed in Canada by University of Toronto Press.
