About this item

The author explores how criminalization and medicalization have shaped understanding of illicit and licit drug use practices in the US and the development of polarized thinking about them, drawing attention to cultural misconceptions about drug practices and the social problems they have produced in the US, and taking into account the experiences of a variety of drug users, including controlled drug users. She examines how drug-use practices have been framed by the cultural influences of criminalization and medicalization through drug policy and law enforcement, medical research, and healthcare practice and recovery cultures, as well as popular culture and user narratives, advertising, and other media campaigns, addressing the roles of pleasure and user agency and their absence in drug discourse. She discusses representations of drug users in American popular media, and the legislation and funding behind drug advertising, including propharmaceutical advertising and anti-drug PSAs from the 1980s to the present, as well as film and television representations; how public drug discourse has been shaped by war as a social policy; how health is or is not maintained through drug use; and desire for pleasure as a key aspect of psychoactive drug use. Included throughout are narratives of users that illustrate alternative ways of understanding drug use. Annotation ©2018 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
