about this item

When Lapidge announced the discovery of a major Carolingian poem in 1987 and attributed it to Hilduin, the learned and powerful abbot of Saint-Denis in Paris (814-840), he anticipated that it would soon be published. It was not. Scholarship quickly showed that it was so closely based on Hilduin's prose Passio S.Dionysii that understanding the poem was impossible without knowing its prose antecedent. Alas, no adequate edition of the prose was available. Therefore, he has prepared editions of both the prose and verse versions of Passio S.Dionysii, in Latin with facing pages of English translation and full scholarly paraphernalia.
