About this item

This volume describes the findings of an ethnography conducted between 2007 and 2012 on the daily life circumstances, experiences, and perceptions of 40 low-income African American women using federally funded HIV/AIDS care services in Midway, North Carolina, illustrating how their lives and health care outcomes were impacted by poverty and inequality and how their experiences of health and health care were shaped by global neoliberalism and related discourses and practices of deservedness and moral belonging. It explores the relationship between women's daily lives, public health policy, and Health Partnership care programs, emphasizing the link between living conditions, the women's senses of survival, their use of survival as a cultural resource, and the service requirement to track and report survival in terms of epidemiology, biomedicine, and fiscal reform. It focuses on how survival operates in terms of health care, support services, and daily life, discussing developments in AIDS-related health and human service programs and federal legislation regarding HIV/AIDS care services; the institutional and community contexts of the women; social and material differences among them; public health-related educational contexts regarding survival; their varied engagement with lessons on survival; and how they conformed to and resisted medical understandings of HIV health and survival.
