Q: How do you change the battery
submitted by Scott - 7 years ago
A: See page 7 of the installation instructions. Carefully pry off the cover and replace the batteries (2AA)
This thing is the absolute worst. I'm pretty sure once it reaches its desired temperature it turns off and never comes back on. I suspect this because i wake up in a 50 degree house every morning, even if i set the thermostat to 85. It is negatively impacting my quality of life and would not recommend it anyone buy this item.

Impossible to program. Tried to lower the temperature of my own home, and it decided to make it even warmer. You had one job: make my house certain temperatures when I tell you. It wants to know what it should be in a week. Can we cross that bridge in a week please?

Worst Thermostat Ever

I’ve had a 30 year old Honeywell thermostats and have never had a problem. Bought the RTH221B. This one is the worst piece of plastic and wires ever put together. I programmed it to heat to 68°, but it pushes the heat up to 71°-72°. I’ve lowered the setting to 67° and it’s still registering 71°. I contacted customer service and they claim there’s nothing wrong. Really! This was a simple two wire installation so there’s no error in that. Additionally, when trying to install the batteries the whole thing fell apart and took forever to get it back together. Luckily this happened before it was a fixed to the wall, so laying it on a table was a bit helpful. Now I’m wondering what will happen when the batteries die; will I have pieces all over the floor.
1 reply from Support team - 1 year ago
Hi SWDz, this is not what you should expect. We would want to know if the set temperature changes itself to 71 or if the set temperature remains in 68 but the heat keeps running past that temperature. If the setpoint is still 68 we need to know if the thermostat keeps showing 'Heat On' when the inside temperature is above the set point. Our Support Center link at the top of the page has all the ways you can get in contact with us to discuss where the issue may be.

Get it installed. works fine and then just stops functioning. Remove the batteries, put new ones, nothing. Reset panel. The thing is dead.

This Honeywell thermostat (RTH221B1039) has been in this house probably since when they first manufactured this model (I bought the house in 2019, manufactured home built in 1996). I’ve had to change the batteries only once since 2019 to today. I keep the temperature set (heat) at 65 F entire winter, 75 F (cool) for entire RTH221B1039 spring/summer/fall; that seems to give me the best rate on electric bill usage. I have kept the programmed days/times 3 or so degrees cooler/warmer when most people are gone during the day or asleep. I’ve seen many customers writing reviews based on negative experience. Is it due to the wiring during install? Is the type of HVAC setup correctly (my switch on back/inside thermostat has switch for OIL/GAS or heat pump). Also, my model is very specific that heat pump without emergency backup is not compatible. I cannot comment, and only speculate like I did above because I have not had those issues. I can share my setup: heating/“furnace” is natural gas, intact and original since 1996. The air conditioner is a huge green metal box outside of the house (commercial grade). Strangely enough no problems at all. I don’t know if this thermostat “plays better” with certain models of HVAC units? Now, having said that, I am going to “upgrade” and buy the WiFi version of this thermostat because it’s the simplest WiFi thermostat where I don’t need all bells and whistles, nor my life/privacy/soul sold forever online. I’m getting this other thermostat, along with the Honeywell security (locking) cover, because I’m tired of people constantly changing/messing with it when they’re clueless as to what they’re doing. But, I will still keep this old model as a backup (perhaps as an alternative wiring setup I can quickly switch over to).

Pro installed about 6 months ago, 2020, and last night we had a power outage. This apparently caused the thermostat to reset or wipe all settings. Following instructions in the manual, VERY small print, attempted to reprogram the box. Looks like it took the imput but NOT WORKING HEAT. Reset furnace switch and reset thermostat program waited a few minutes, about ten, and turn on furnace. Blower runs, NO HEAT and at 6 degree F, it is cold.

I bought this thermostat a week ago and it has yet to follow the schedule I have set. It can't even respond properly to a temporary setting, which is basically asking it to run manually. I have never had such a poor thermostat. This will be going back to the store today.

Have had this product over a year and do not have one good thing to say about it. Started having problems right after purchase. Waking up to freezing temperatures when settings are all correct, this thermostat does not regulate heat or respond to temperature changes in the home.

does not turn on heat at set low temp, or keep heater on until set temp is reached. carefully programmed for all scenarios (weekday, weekend, day, night, evening, etc). But would only attempt to start heater when power switch was moved to OFF, then back to HEAT. Simply does not work.

Bought this a year ago and worked fine. Now it’s not sticking to the schedule. For one evening (home from work) programmed time, it heats 90 minutes early. Everything is programmed correctly, didn’t happen first season ‘heat’ was used. But we just switched over from AC to heat and it’s heating too soon for this setting every day. Who knows might be doing the same for another setting but we are asleep during the first heat up period.

If you follow the instructions this thermostat works great - it does exactly what it promises to do (one program for the entire week). My only complaint is that the batteries are required for it to work, not just to provide backup in case of a power outage.

I bought this thermostat to replace an older round one which was not programmable, didn't even allow me to set different day/night temps. I got this installed by my electrician. It is pretty easy to program -- you can set a weekday wakeup/leave/return/sleep schedule, and then Saturday and Sunday separately. I believe we've lowered our fuel costs by having these settings automatically made. I just replaced the AAA batteries for the first time -- very easy.
