Description
Horizons of Spirit Island is a cooperative strategy game of settler-destruction for 1-3 players, designed by R. Eric Reuss. Players are called to defend their home as Spirits of nature, fighting to defeat the colonizing Invaders that threaten to destroy their natural existence! The Invaders expand every turn, colonizing more and more of the land as they advance, their towns and cities spreading Blight wherever they’re left unchecked. All hope is not lost, though! Players choose from five Spirits who each wield their own unique elemental powers, from the stealthy and dangerous Devouring Teeth Lurk Underfoot to the implacable and overwhelming Rising Heat of Stone and Sand. Horizons of Spirit Island is compatible with the entire collection of Spirit Island products, with over sixteen unique Spirits, complex new mechanics, and challenging scenarios to choose from across multiple expansions. Start your Spirit Island journey with this game, or grow your existing collection with five new spirits and a new set of game components. Horizons contains all the cards and tokens needed to play the core Spirit Island game, with 5 Spirits that are unique to this expansion, at half the cost of the core game. It's advertised as being a good starting point for new or younger players, but having tried it out, I feel this isn't quite accurate. Horizons uses flat cardboard punch out tokens instead of the core game's plastic miniatures, but the game board remains the same size, so it's very difficult to fit all the pieces into a given space and things get very crowded. Futhermore, the 5 Spirits included in this module require a strong understanding of the game's flow and mechanics to make use of, and can be overwhelming or confusing for new players. It's in a niche place where it's not really a good deal for anyone who already has the core game, as the only new thing you're getting are the 5 exclusive spirits, but I'd hesitate to recommend it to someone brand new. It feels like a cheaper starting option for someone who has played the core game at a friend's house or online.

This game got me hooked after 2 weeks and I had to buy the original and another expansion. It is a very complex cooperative game where you are trying to grow and become stronger while holding back the tides of the invading armies. Imagine the puzzle of pandemic with the options of a deckbuiler like Clank. It takes some investment to understand the game, and we broke the rules on accident many times because there is a lot to remember but this game is so fun for us. If you like a good, hard, cooperative challenge with a really fun theme (anti-imperialism), I would suggest this game. Less time to set up than really hardcore games like Gloomhaven, and takes at least an hour or two to play until you are really used to it. Highly recommended. I wouldn't buy this if you don't want to think a lot, or if you don't like being on the brink of losing a lot.

Once you get past the somewhat clunky title, you find an interesting strategy game. It should appeal to casual players, and also has enough strategy to hold the interest of more seasoned players. There's a quick guide to get you started within minutes and a fuller rulebook that still doesn't have the eye-glazing effect of some strategy boardgames. Also included are tips on playing. Everyone should appreciate those. You can even play solo, if weather prevents friends from attending.

Spirit Island is my all time favorite board game, and I love that this new package is cheaper and a bit more streamline for a wider target audience. This game is more complex than most of the classic board games that many people know. While it is not a game for young kids, it absolutely has become a modern classic, and is one of the top rated games of all times. I highly recommend anyone interested in challenging, cooperative (you work together to defeat the game) board game!

Having owned the original Spirit Island and it's expansions I was interested in this version for both the new spirits ( which can be added to Spirit Island as well as the streamlined gameplay for friends interested in Spirit Island, but intimidated by the complexity of the original. This game is an excellent tool for new players or for a quick snappy setup for returning Spirit Island fans. This version includes a great tutorial game as well as clear and concise directions. the spirits are great additions and are well balanced and fun. The components are good quality and as a plus many of them can be used with the original Spirit Island game. Highly recommend for anyone who is interested in or already loves Spirit Island games.

This is my favorite board game. Spirits options for horizons are easy to play but still really fun. Great intro to spirit island for new players and the unique spirits for this version make it worth buying for experienced players as well.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that they already have this in stock, despite it saying online that it wouldn't be out until October! I've owned the original spirit Island but I felt like it was a little too complicated for me and so at first glance have to taking out the components and reading the instructions. This seems like a really nice way to get into it if you are intimidated.

I already own the base game for Spirit Island, and got this new version for the new low complexity spirits. We have enjoyed the fun new spirits and find them to be super entertaining to use with our full base game. We are excited to use these new spirits to introduce new players to the game. I am also enjoying the new presence color markers! I love the teal and maroon! Thanks so much for offering a great introduction to the game to new players and also enhancing the offerings for veteran players too!

Purchased it as an expansion to the original Spirit Island game. Even after 24 spirits in the mainline game, the new spirits still feel very thematic and fresh. All 5 of the new spirits are rated as low complexity but in my opinion the skill ceiling feels much higher than the previously released low complexity spirits. All in all I'm very happy with this release and look forward to more content in the future.

Spirit Island is an immersive game featuring spirits defending their island against invaders. It's the best cooperative game out there with endless replayability. My husband is competatvie and I am NOT, so we love playing this game where we're fighting together against the board. I would highly reccomend trying out Spirit Island if you're into cooperative games.

I picked this up to get the new Spirits, but was pleasently suprised to find it plays just like the original Spirit Island. There are only a few differences: - Includes a nice 3 player quick-start guide - Spirits are lower complexity - Maximum player count is 3 - Components are lower quality (punch board instead of plastic / wood) and thin spirit boards - The game board is 2 sided and static (not modular) - There are no blight cards, adversaries, or scenarios - This is a Target exclusive for 2 years At first I was dissapointed at the thin Spirit Boards, but after laminating them it is fine. Greater Than Games will release the rest of the spirits on the same card stock thickness with holographic graphics/print. For the rest of the components, I just use the better quality versions from the big box and wooden token pack. Gameplay is the same as the Spirit Island that I know and love minus the removal of the blight cards. Overall this is still a 5/5 for me.
