Fun game. Cheaply made.

The kids do love playing this game but only 2 of the hippos work. It’s so cheaply made. I’ll be exchanging to see if we can get one with 4 working hippos but based on reviews it doesn’t sound like they’ll be working for long. It’s too bad they can’t make it like they used to since it’s such a fun game when it’s working!

Typically I don’t review items but this one needs a few notes for parents prior to purchasing. Note - we bought this for our independent three year old. 1. The hippos are quite difficult to attach to the game board. 2. They want you to disassemble the game to store it in the box. Doesn’t seem like a huge problem but can you imagine a kid trying to assemble the game every time they want to play…every time. Super frustrating as an adult I can’t imagine a child being able to do it. 3. The hippos don’t really pop up to grab the marbles well. Overall it’s a great nostalgic game that is poorly executed in todays assembly. I’d skip this version and look for a better made one.

Poor Quality - Hippos Broke First Day

2 of the 4 hippos broke the first day we played. The spring mechanism seems to have jammed. Hungry hippos games from the 80s were such better quality and never broke despite being played with a lot!

Like others have said, the quality is not there. The mechanisms that make the hippos move don’t work half the time and the parts come off very easily. Not fun for kiddos to play.

Packaging nightmare

The packaging of this game is absolutely terrible. I don’t understand why they would make it so you need to disassemble the game in order to get it back in the box? Why not just use a box that fits the game with all the hippos attached? The current setup makes it impossible for kids to independently set up or clean up this game without parental assistance. The box also has a huge hole in the front as part of the display I guess? But all it does is make it a horrible container for all the tiny marbles. They are constantly falling out and rolling all over the floor when we try and put this game away or get it out. Honestly, the packaging issues are such a hassle that it makes this game not worth using unless you can find a different container to store the game in.

It hardly works...maybe like half the time a hippo will come up to chomp marbles. It is a poor quality game. My toddler loves it but has nothing to compare it to.

I purchased this game for my daughter and one for my nephew because I loved it so much as a kid. However, unlike the game manufactured in the 80s and 90s, this one is made out of completely shoddy, cheap plastic that doesn’t even function properly. The hippos’ heads randomly come off, the marbles (a term I use loosely as they are, in no way, marbles) get stuck inside the hippos, and the lever that controls the hippo’s mouths gets jammed every time it is depressed. The reservoir for the marbles next to the hippos only releases one marble at a time which makes absolutely no sense at all. The old version used to release them all at once which is when the full hunger of the hippos was unleashed. My sister told me that her game has all of the same issues which really only suggests that the manufacturing of this product is to be blamed. What a waste of money and time. We don’t even play it anymore because it caused more aggravation and frustration than anything else. Please avoid this product. Or teleport yourself to the 90s and pick one up there.

Fun game, as I remember as a kid, but it’s so cheaply made now that you can’t even play it. The hippos mouths don’t open all the way, the levers stick constantly and the fact that you have to disassemble it every time to put it away is garbage. Don’t waste your money.

Kids loved the game but it is not well made. Plastic is very thin and started to bend first time playing with it which meant the hippos were getting harder to operate. Not as good as the 80s version, but nothing is anymore.
