Hunts used to be a trusted name in the tomato arena- no longer.. large can of while peeled tomatoes was mostly water tomato juice, the hard middle center of the tomato, and lots of outside skins..

A root in the can

Well, I'd like to complain about the unpeeled tomatoes and hard tops, but... the stem with the root still attached takes the cake today. I wish I could attach a photo. It looked like an alien. My friends were horrified. The inside of the stem was so hard, that thing must've been sentient when it was alive.

We’ve consistently used the whole tomatoes as well as the tomato sauce to make our gravy, lately the whole tomatoes, which is stated on the can to be steam peeled, we’ve noticed more and more skins still attached to the tomatoes, it may be time to start buying another brand. I, personally don’t like the skins in my sauce.

These are the best tomatoes I’ve tried. There aren’t a ton of seeds and are not watery. I use tomatoes to make sauce with. My mother in law from Italy agrees :)

I buy Hunt's brand tomato products because I know I'm getting a quality tomato product. The last 2 cans of whole peeled tomatoes still had skin, and hard cores, on 3/4 of the tomatoes in the cans. I of course dumped them into the cooking pot. Only to have to fish them back out to peel and core most of the tomatoes. I have another can still in my cupboard. I hope it's not the same. The tomatoes themselves are usually very good, consistently ripe and large.

My family and I have always Hunt's tomato products and love them. Several years back, I remember getting Whole Tomatoes, but I don't remember them being plum tomatoes. Didn't you use to use a regular tomato instead??

I have always purchased whole tomatoes from Hunts. The flavor is wonderful, however the last few months when I use the whole ( peeled ) tomatoes I have not been very happy. Hunts states the whole tomatoes are peeled but there has been alot of skins left on the tomatoes along with the stem core.

These tomatoes taste like, you guessed it, tomatoes. They don’t taste like a fresh tomato, but that’s because they’re not. They taste like good canned tomatoes.

I love using these whole plum tomatoes since they are already moist they are perfect for a homemade salsa in the blender. No added flavors so it’s just as great as fresh tomatoes but easier to use for salsa this way.

When I have the time and the energy I like to make my own homemade tomato sauce for spaghetti. This whole tomatoes are delicious when your crush them yourself, the whole tomato helps retain some of the flavor lost when you buy them pre-crushed

I cook a ton with tomato's, that being said, I don't typically reach for hunts. Hunts is typically so much more expensive than other brands just because it's a brand name. That being said I think they work great for most recipes and all canned tomatoes are really just the same thing.

Not peeled and hard yellow tops

Having an occasional tomatoe with a small piece of skin not peeled is acceptable, but of late I have to just plan on peeling them and removing the hard yellow stem top. The last 28oz can I opened I nearly covered an entire piece of paper towel of skins. (I have a photo as well as the lid with the code if needed) I pay a premium for your product as I do believe Hunts has a better taste, however your quality is making me 2nd guess that future buying decision. The past several cans have been a disappointment, hopefully this can be resolved and I can see the difference on my remaining cans.

Disappointed Old Cook - 3 years ago

I have used Hunts Whole Tomatoes almost 50 years. I have tried every brand you can get in the past few years because I have become disappointed in the quality I have gotten lately from Hunts. First off, I am finding it so difficult to get the 14.5 oz cans. I live alone and I don't need a 28 oz can when I cook. So I tried the diced tomatoes. Well, those were a waste of my money. They were nothing but skins, stems and cores. The only way I could use them was to put them in the food processor and puree them. That didn't do my spaghetti sauce much good. Now I still buy Hunts because the still have the best flavor, but I do have to buy the 28 oz can. That way out of the 5 or 6 tomatoes in the can, I have the 3 good ones to use in my recipe. Please food is getting so expensive, give us back your good tomatoes and give the over ripe and nasty ones to whoever makes the nasty generic brands.
