About this item
Almost six feet tall, with red hair and very pale skin, 12-year-old Emma Freke is a social outcast in her tiny New England town. Even her name sounds like "I am a freak." Her mother, Donatella, is into all things New Age, and their family-run bead store doesn't help Emma's reputation. She even has to have special "socialization" sessions with a school counselor. But when Emma is invited to the Freke family reunion in remote Wisconsin, she not only discovers that she's not alone, but that her life with her mother is very special. This middle-grade coming-of-age story is sarcastic, hilarious, and tender.
