About this item

The theological issue of the divine attributes was a major debate between traditionalist and rationalist Muslim scholars since the early centuries of Islam, and Ovadia explores the methods that Hanbalite scholar of 8th/14th century Damascus, Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751/1350) used to defend traditionalist and attack rationalist views in his major work al-Sawa'iq al-mursala (The Unleashed Thunderbolts). After discussing the scholarly setting of Mamluk Damascus: al-Swa-iq's birthplace, and the role of the work in his theological writing, she analyzes his four refutations: the Islamic scriptures produce certain knowledge, revelation is the provenance of knowledge, undermining the theoretical basis of majaz, and Hadith literature produces certainty.
