about this item

Academics and practitioners working in various fields in Europe and Canada present 10 papers from a session at the Royal Geographical Society Annual Conference in 2014, to address the importance of interdisciplinarity and collaboration in community co-production through combining academic and community knowledge to contribute to insights about social impact and engagement. They consider the possibilities and tensions for co-produced research practices that emerge from the joining of community-oriented research practices, an increased institutional emphasis on community co-production in academia, and the critique of the key terms of these practices. They offer case studies of what co-production looks like and the challenges that occur, focusing on the increasing importance of collaboration and engagement as part of the impact agenda, including public engagement in the higher education sector, collaborative research with women’s groups, the relationship between universities and museums, co-produced interdisciplinary research, and participatory research in a volunteer youth-led community radio station, followed by discussion of the role of arts practices in advancing co-produced research for interdisciplinary studies and to stimulate inclusion and transformation, including cultural ecosystems mapping, gender diversity in collaborative projects, an art-research project meant to engage with contested geographies, and the contributions of disabled people to sustainability planning.
