Description

Ingredients Matter laundry soap powder is powerfully good for clothes, you, and the earth—because it's real soap made with coconut oil instead of hidden petroleum, synthetic ingredients, and needless plastic. Third party tested to clean better than the leading detergents, this highly concentrated formula combines coconut soap flakes with other natural ingredients to be tough on dirt and stains while still being gentle to fabrics and skin (and much kinder to the planet with every wash). Why soap? Ingredients Matter laundry powders use soap instead of synthetic detergents because most synthetic detergents are made using petroleum, which isn’t great for you or the earth. Yet, they’re everywhere—including in most plant-based laundry products. Soap is different. Real soap is the original household cleaner and it’s safe for anything on earth except messes, smells and grime. Ingredients Matter laundry powder is free from synthetic fragrances, synthetic preservatives, dyes, parabens, phosphates and optical brighteners. Made in the USA, this laundry soap powder delivers great results in HE and standard machines and works in all water temperatures. It's Safer Choice certified, biodegradable, and Leaping Bunny certified to be cruelty free—which means it's never tested on animals and doesn't contain any animal-based ingredients. The fragrance free formula is dermatologist tested hypoallergenic, so it's ideal for sensitive skin and noses. The packaging is free from needless plastic and is 100% recyclable, because big plastic jugs are so last century. You shouldn’t have to choose between cleaner clothes and a cleaner planet!

Q: Can it be used in HE machines? How much and do you put it in the dispenser or directly into the drum?

submitted by T - 2 years ago
  • A: I have a front loader HE Whirlpool and add about a half a scoop for a normal sized load, directly in the drum before adding clothes. For just 'normally' dirty clothes (not super greasy or anything), that seems to be plenty to get them clean. If you notice any soap residue in the washer on on clothes after the cycle, try using a bit less powder next time.

submitted byrJJ - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi - yes it can - thanks for asking. One level scoop is all you need - can add it directly to the clothes in the drum. If you have any other questions please reach out anytime at support@ingredientsmatterclean.com. Thanks and have a great day.

Q: How many loads can you wash with this?

submitted by Kris - 8 months ago
  • A: Hi Kris - Our 36oz Laundry Soap handles 72 standard loads. For smaller loads (like a small load of baby clothes), you can use a half scoop and lower water level in your washer, which will extend the product beyond 72 loads.

Q: Hello. Can I use this for newborn clothes?

submitted by Kris - 8 months ago
  • A: Hi Kris - You can use our Laundry Soap for newborn clothes. Our soap doesn't have harsh detergents or ethoxylates, so it's a great option for newborn and baby clothes.

Q: Since this is soap, won't it leave a residue in the washing machine and clothing over time? If so, how can this be prevented?

submitted by La - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi! Thanks for your question. Our laundry soap is formulated to avoid typical soap residue, so there shouldn't be any residue with standard water hardness. We also offer a 100% happiness guarantee so if you do have any issues please reach out to support@ingredientsmatterclean.com.

Q: In a previous question about whether this product has enzymes, you said it does. Why aren't they listed in the ingredients list on the box?

Q: Can the paper bag be composted at an industrial composting facility? My city composts and I would like to know if this is OK to put in the compost can.

Q: Hello, is there plastic used in the packaging? Thank you.

submitted by Britt - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi Britt - thanks for the question. We have a very thin layer of biodegradable poly on our inner paper bag to protect the product and ensure quality. We also include a small biodegradable plastic scoop. All packaging is fully recyclable in common collection. We are working hard to eliminate all plastic in the near future. Thanks again for your question - hope that helps.

Q: What amount is used for a small and large load?

submitted by Anonymous - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi - one full scoop should be all you need. Depending on what you are washing could try 1.5 scoops for really heavy duty loads. Thank you for asking + have a great day.

submitted by Haley - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi Haley! Our Laundry Soap Powder is safe for all fabrics. To avoid shrinking, avoid high heat when you wash and dry. We like to use mesh washing bags for delicates, cool to warm water, and the delicate cycle. Our Laundry Soap is also great for hand washing! Don’t buy! As soon as you open it all the powder goes into the air and it burns your nose and throat. It might be safe for the planet but it can’t be safe for the consumer if you’re breathing it every time you open the box.

Hi Susie - We're sorry you had this experience. In our updated formula we've added some additional oils to help with this dusting that some people experience. If you're able to email us at support@ingredientsmatterclean.com, we'd like to make double-check that this issue was with the old formula, and we'd be happy to send you a box of the newer product to see if that makes a difference. Thanks -Talia

It cleans well, leaves no residue and leaves clothes smelling fresh. I tried both versions, unscented and the lavender. I’m extremely sensitive to scents so I was hesitant to try the lavender, but the plain was out of stock. Ended up it was ok, but I wouldn’t buy lavender again. The product in box has a strong lavender smell, but it does not linger in the wash. Initially I had a problem with white flakes on clothing but that’s user error. Follow the directions: add it to the drum of washer BEFORE you add clothing and don’t use more than 1-2 scoops, essentially a couple tablespoons, because it’s not a big scoop. If your clothes are really dirty, pre-treat/spot with a different product intended for that purpose, this is not that, and let them soak in the soapy wash water. I have a basic washer, so I can pause it in wash mode and just let clothes soak for an extra 15 minutes, great for workout clothes. And don’t try to mix it with water in advance to make it dissolve. First of all it’s not designed to work that way and second, have you ever left a bar of soap in water? It’s messy. Don’t do it. Just follow the box instructions and you won’t have all those challenges. And lastly, wear a mask when you use it. It’s SOAP, it’s alkaline, it will burn your mucus membranes (eyes/nose) just like if you get soap in your eye or nose while showering. This is not rocket science. I used a plastic sugar dispenser to minimize inhaling the dust and also reduce the number of times I’m opening the package creating dust cloud. I attached a photo of the scoop so you can see it’s barely bigger than the tablespoon next to it. Also in the image is the sugar dispenser that I use to add the soap to my washer so I minimize the dust flying and don’t need to use a mask for every load, just when I refill the dispenser.

I agree with the many other reviews on the dust particles. The box the laundry soap arrived in was filled with loose powder when I opened it and burned my nose when breathing it in. I had no problem with it dissolving in the wash but my clothes and towels had a stale smell to them. I had previously used Charlie soap which had good reviews and did an excellent job but thought I’d try Laundry Soap because it was more reasonably priced. I will not be buying it again though.

Hi DeDe - we're so sorry you had this experience with our Laundry Soap. It sounds like you may have received a box of our older formula, which did tend to get a little dry and dusty after sitting on the shelf, leading to the issue you ran into. If you'd like, I'd be happy to send you a box of our new formula to try out. You can send us an email at support@ingredientsmatterclean.com.

I stumbled upon this laundry detergent while using the EWG app, where it scored high marks! I’ve used around a half a box, so far, and couldn’t be more pleased. We have an HE washer, and use warm water, and we’ve never had any issue with the flakes not dissolving. Our clothes have always come out very clean, which can sometimes be quite the feat with 3 teenage boys! I’ll be a repeat customer!

There are a lot of comments on this thread that say it does not dissolve in cold water. The majority of laundry detergents/soaps require 60 degrees to dissolve - that is not cold water. I really recommend everyone read ‘laundry love’ by Patric Richardson - this book taught me the correct way to do laundry. This soap is excellent when used correctly.

Love the idea of this product and was happy with the way it cleaned my clothes. But it didn’t come with a scoop - so I really had no idea how much to use. Also the dusty particles gave me an asthmatic coughing fit every time I added it to my laundry load! The phlegm that this product created in my lungs would last for hours. Not cool.
1 reply from IM Customer Care team - 3 months ago
Sorry you weren't happy with our Laundry Soap. Every box should include a scoop, but a few were missed in a recent production run. One scoop is equal to 1.5 tablespoons. As for the dusting issue, we have updated our formula to help with that, and the new formula is rolling out on Target shelves now. Hope that helps!

Love the ingredients! But, dust particulates are so fine, and poof everywhere upon touching the powder, burn inside your nose and throat. They are DANGEROUS! I had read reviews mentioning the fine dust prior to buying. I admit, I thought, “if it’s really so bad, no worries, I will put on an N95 mask and mix it with water., then we can use it as liquid detergent.” Well…it’s REALLY THAT BAD. And mixing with water is virtually impossible. It turns into a greasy glob of a mess, even with over a gallon of water added. Soap particles won’t dissolve without *super* hot water. Family has tried to use it in warm water washes, but the pseudo-watered-down-soap leaves greasy stains on clothing. I absolutely hate writing such a negative review for a company that uses fragrance free, natural ingredients, but this one is not good.

Do not buy. This soap does not fully dissolve regardless of the washing machine settings. White soap particles cover washed clothing. Rinsing doesn’t help as soap particles remain in the washing machine as well.
1 reply from IM Customer Care team - 4 months ago
Hi WorkingMom - We're so sorry you ran into this issue with our Laundry Soap. The soap should fully dissolve in warm and hot wash settings, or for cold water washes we recommend dissolving the product in a jar of hot water before adding to the washer drum. 1 reply from IM Customer Care team - 4 months ago
Hi OS - We're so sorry you had this experience with our product. Sometimes this dissolution issue happens in cold water, so our new packaging has specific cold water wash instructions: we recommend dissolving one scoop of Laundry Soap in 8oz hot water (we like to shake it up in a 16oz jar), then add the mixture directly to the washer drum. Hope that helps!

Eco friendly and effective, but not perfect

4 out of 5 stars
Kari P - 9 months ago, Verified purchaser
Overall, I like this laundry soap. It's fairly cost effective, eco friendly, and usually in-stock on the shelves. I like that by using a powdered cleaner I'm not spending money on water nor wasting the fuel required to transport it. Overall our clothes come out smelling and looking clean, although we are on our second or third box and still haven't tried to use this to tackle any big stains. This box lasts a while and does quite a few loads. The only thing I find is that this sometimes leaves little white specs on clothes that are washed cold - I think it's the coconut oil flakes because the cold water isn't enough to melt them so that they condition the fabric. You can pick them off and they don't damage the clothes at all, but its a bit annoying, especially since we do most of our laundry using cold water, especially dark or colored fabrics, which come out covered in little white flecks. I have found that I get fewer flakes if I put the soap in the dispenser vs directly in the washer (contrary to the instructions). I haven't noticed this issue when we wash towels or linens (which we usually wash hot or warm). Overall I would recommend that people give this product a try, but I also don't think its the holy grail of laundry soaps. I'll probably keep looking to find a eco-friendly product we like better, but suspect that we'd have to order something like that online and I like that I can just pick this up at the store.

Hi Kari - Thanks so much for your review. We are actually updating our wash instructions on future packages with some new recommendations. We suggest dissolving one scoop of our laundry soap in 8oz warm water (we like to use a 16oz Ball jar to shake it up), then pour right in the washer drum before adding clothes and washing cold. Here’s a quick video of that process: https://www.instagram.com/p/CSpeywWpDHE/ Hope that helps!

This is simply the best laundry detergent, excuse me, laundry soap, we have ever used. Clothes, towels, bedsheets, everything comes out clean and fresh and SOFT. We have completely stopped using fabric softener - there's no need with this stuff. We don't spot-treat small food stains, they come right out with this. There is no discernible fragrance to it, just clean and fresh, which is definitely the way we like it.
