About this item

This textbook on the international politics of human rights since the end of WWII assumes no background on the part of students. While the book concentrates on how states and international actors have dealt with human rights, there is much material on the domestic politics of human rights. The authors are careful to point out that they include their own views and interpretations, rather than presenting all material objectively. In the first section, the opening chapter surveys the historical development of international human rights since WWII; subsequent chapters deal with philosophical issues and arguments of cultural relativism and political realism. New for this edition is a chapter on the unity of all human rights: civil and political as well as and economic and social rights. Part 2 covers multilateral, bilateral, and transnational action, both separately and comparatively, with special attention to US foreign policy. Part 3 concentrates on three contemporary issues: humanitarian intervention, globalization and human rights, and terrorism and human rights. The text contains 14 case studies from around the world, plus 10 chapter-ending problem descriptions and discussion of possible solutions, tackling issues such as hate speech, the war in Syria, and the US ratification of human rights treaties. Other learning features include bold key terms and an extensive glossary. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
